Who needs a student visa?

Foreign nationals who want to study in the United States need a student visa for the purpose of accomplishing their dream of studying in the United States. There are two types of visas F and M to enter the country. 

F Visa

This F visa is ideal for academic programs at educational institutions like universities, colleges, high schools, seminars, conservatories, and other activities related to academic institutions. language training programs are also included. 

M Visa

M Visa is for vocational and other nonacademic purposes, language training programs are exempted from this type of visa.

Important Note: Visitors cannot use a Visitor (B) visa or the Visa Waiver Program to study in the United States, except for short, recreational courses not leading to a degree or certificate.

Steps to Apply for a Student Visa

  2. Receive Form I-20 and Pay the SEVIS Fee

  6. Gather Required Documents

  9. Entering the United States

Get Accepted to a SEVP-Approved School

The first step is to apply for a program in any of the American universities. If you get accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter or a letter of invitation confirming your enrollment in the university. This can be applied using SEVP (Students and Exchange Visitor Program)

Receive Form I-20 and Pay the SEVIS Fee

After getting the acceptance letter your school will register you in SEVIS and issue a form named FORM I-20 which is the certificate of eligibility for student status. You will also need to pay the SEVIS fee.

Complete Online Visa Application (DS-160)

After the SEVIS fee payment, you will submit the visa application form with correct and accurate information. 

Schedule a Visa Interview (if required)

After the application submission, you must get an interview appointment at the embassy or consulate, in most cases, it is required. You can apply at the embassy in your home country but there is also an option available to apply in another country but that option is difficult.

Must check the embassy or consulate website for the current wait time for visa interview appointments.

Gather Required Documents

It is important to gather the required documents so you do not face hurdles during the process; the following documents are required for the student visa

  • Valid passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay)
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Application fee payment receipt (if applicable)
  • One passport-sized photo (meeting specific requirements)
  • Form I-20 (provided by your school)
  • Proof of academic preparation (transcripts, diplomas, test scores)
  • Proof of financial support to cover educational and living costs

Attend Your Visa Interview

The embassy or the counselor’s office will interview you to check your eligibility for a student visa. Make sure you are prepared to answer questions with confidence, you will be inquired about your study plans and financial support.

Visa Issuance (if approved)

If your application is accepted, your visa is accepted. You will be required to pay an additional issuance fee and make arrangements to get your passport with the student visa. 

Entering the United States

A visa does not guarantee entry into the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port of entry have the authority to permit or deny admission.

Upon entry, you will be given an admission stamp or Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record).
