Steps to Apply for a Student Visa

Get Accepted to a SEVP-Approved School

The first step is to apply for a program in any of the American universities. If you get accepted, you will receive an acceptance letter or a letter of invitation confirming your enrollment in the university. This can be applied using SEVP (Students and Exchange Visitor Program)

Receive Form I-20 and Pay the SEVIS Fee

After getting the acceptance letter your school will register you in SEVIS and issue a form named FORM I-20 which is the certificate of eligibility for student status. You will also need to pay the SEVIS fee.

Complete Online Visa Application (DS-160)

After the SEVIS fee payment, you will submit the visa application form with correct and accurate information. 

Schedule a Visa Interview (if required)

After the application submission, you must get an interview appointment at the embassy or consulate, in most cases, it is required. You can apply at the embassy in your home country but there is also an option available to apply in another country but that option is difficult.

Attend Your Visa Interview

Visa Issuance (if approved)

If your application is accepted, your visa is accepted. You will be required to pay an additional issuance fee and make arrangements to get your passport with the student visa. 

Entering the United States

A visa does not guarantee entry into the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port of entry have the authority to permit or deny admission.

Upon entry, you will be given an admission stamp or Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record).
