A Plaster Mason, also known as a plasterer, is a skilled tradesperson who specializes in applying plaster to walls, ceilings, and other surfaces to create smooth or textured finishes in both interior and exterior settings. This role requires a strong understanding of various plastering techniques, materials, and tools, as well as the ability to read blueprints and work from architectural drawings.
Plaster Masons prepare surfaces by cleaning, lathing, or applying bonding agents to ensure proper adhesion of the plaster. They mix plaster to the correct consistency and composition, including traditional lime plaster, gypsum-based compounds, or modern synthetic plasters, depending on the project’s requirements. They apply coats using hand tools such as trowels, hawks, and floats, or by using spray machines for larger-scale projects.
This craft demands a high level of precision and manual dexterity, especially when working on decorative or ornamental plasterwork, such as cornices, ceiling medallions, or historic restoration projects. Plaster Masons often work alongside other construction professionals such as drywall installers, masons, and painters to achieve a seamless finish.
Job Responsibilities:
Preparing and sealing surfaces for plaster application.
Applying coats of plaster using appropriate techniques (scratch coat, brown coat, and finish coat).
Installing lath and reinforcing mesh where needed.
Repairing cracks, holes, and damaged plaster surfaces.
Creating decorative or specialty finishes such as Venetian plaster or stucco.
Ensuring safety standards and building codes are met on-site.

Requirements:
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Completion of an apprenticeship program or 2+ years of experience in plastering or masonry work.
Proven experience with interior and exterior plaster applications.
Technical Skills:
Proficient in mixing and applying various types of plaster (e.g., lime, gypsum, cement, stucco).
Ability to install lath, mesh, and base materials.
Skilled in hand and machine-based plastering techniques.
Capable of working with trowels, floats, hawks, sprayers, and other plastering tools.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and project specifications.
Physical Requirements:
Good physical condition with the ability to lift heavy materials (up to 50 lbs), stand, kneel, and bend for extended periods.
Comfortable working at heights or on scaffolding.
Manual dexterity and attention to detail.
