What is a Japan Student Visa

This visa is an allowance for foreigners to live in Japan for study purposes. It is especially for those who are accepted by accredited universities, colleges, or other institutions providing study programs.

Types of Japan Student Visas

Pre-College Student Visa
College Student Visa

Pre-College Student Visa: 

This visa is not a nondegree program, and includes language schools or preparatory courses.

College Student Visa: 

This is not a usual degree program in universities, graduate schools, or vocational schools. 

Japan Student Visa Requirements (2024)

Acceptance by an approved school or an educational institute is essential. must be recognized by the Ministry of Education, sports, culture, science and technology.
An eligibility certificate is also required that is issued by the Immigration Bureau upon your application to school.
Passport validity for the entire study duration.
The visa application form will be obtained from the Japanese embassy in your home country.
Photos of passport size, one or two, depending on the demand of the embassy or the accredited office. Must not be wearing a cap or glasses.
Proof of financial status is also important, this includes a bank statement, scholarship details, or a sponsor’s letter of guarantee.
Academic records or documents. Transcripts from your most recent schools as proof of study.

If someone else is financially supporting you, you need to have a letter of guarantee.
In some cases, the office will demand a medical certificate from the applicant.
Explain your study plan, your goals, and your future plan is also required.

Japan Student Visa Application Process

The application process requires admission to a Japanese educational institution.
Eligibility certificate that the school will apply on your behalf.
Once the certificate is issued, the school will mail it to you.
For the visa application, you need to submit the CoE, passport, application forms, photos, and other required documents to the Embassy of Japan or consulate in your residing country.

Validity and Extension

The validity period is three months to four years, this aligns with your program duration.
Extension programs are also available and this can be applied at an immigration Bureau office in Japan at least a month before your current visa is going to expire. 
Academic progress must be shown by documents and financial means to continue your study.

Translation Requirements

Documents that are submitted must be translated into English or Japanese.
If it is in another language, consider translating it into desired languages by professional translators, and make sure you submit both the original and translated documents.

Can I Work While Studying?

The answer is YES but you will need permission to work part-time (up to 28 hours/week during term, 8 hours/day during holidays).
Certain jobs might have restrictions related to work or a job.

Post-Graduation Visa Options

“Assigned Exercises” visa for work hunting. “Engineer/Expert in Humanities/Global Administrations” visa for the people who find employment.

Health Insurance

Joining the National Health Insurance (NHI) framework is obligatory for stays surpassing 3 months. Apply at your nearby city or ward office upon arrival. Cost shifts by city and income.

School Application Rejection After Visa Application

If your application is rejected make sure to inform the embassy or consulate as soon as possible.
Try to explore other schools and enroll yourself there quickly and update your visa application accordingly.
Withdraw your visa application if you do not find admission even after applying to various universities.
